Way Back Machine 1973 Fall
I was hired by WJML in the Spring of 1970. The lineup was Bill Supernaw mornings.
Boyd Roe 10 am until 2 pm. I filled the 2 pm to 6 pm slot and Claire Baum 6 pm until midnight.
Bill had been on the staff from the first day WJML-FM signed on in 1965. The original studio
was in the Perry Davis Hotel where the business office was located in the basement floor.
When the AM transmitter signed on, studios were built at the antenna site.
This is a fall 1973 air check. WJML basically was an Adult MOR station with some 'block programming'
featureing country music, big band and classical music programs usually later in the day or weekends.
We even aired a public affairs program provided by The USSR,  featuring human interest stories
about life in the Soviet Union. This was a pre- Glasnost attempt of openness and cultural exchange
between the USSR and the United States.
The Sales Manager Dave Williams thought I should pick up the tempo with more contemporary
music after 3 pm to appeal to the after school crowd. At first I pushed the envelope and developed
"The Wireless Show" and even created my own jingles. Perhaps I'll include a little of that in another update.
This air check features some classic commercials from Coca Cola and Stroh's Beer. Mike Harrington is
heard doing the Top Drawer, Bill Supernaw with Kroger's and one of my "Wireless Show" jingles featuring an
Edgar Winter carve- up with a JML jingle.
